How to Maintain Healthy Gums
Gum health is decided at the gumline and between the teeth — the two places a toothbrush most often misses.

What healthy gums look like
Healthy gum tissue is firm, fits closely around each tooth, and does not bleed when brushed or flossed properly. Colour varies naturally between individuals, so bleeding, swelling and tenderness are more reliable indicators than shade alone.
Because inflammation is often painless, it is worth actively checking rather than waiting to notice something.
Technique at the gumline
Plaque accumulates where the tooth meets the gum, and that narrow zone is where brushing technique matters most. Angling the bristles roughly forty-five degrees towards the gumline and using small, gentle movements cleans that junction better than fast horizontal scrubbing.
Pressure is counterproductive: hard brushing damages both gum tissue and root surfaces without removing more plaque. If your bristles splay within a few weeks, you are pressing too hard.
Between the teeth
A brush cannot reach the surfaces where adjacent teeth touch, and those surfaces represent a substantial share of the total. Cleaning between teeth once daily is therefore not an optional refinement.
Interdental brushes are generally more effective than floss where the spaces are large enough to admit them; floss remains appropriate for tight contacts. Water flossers help some people, particularly those with bridges, implants or limited dexterity. The best tool is largely the one that gets used consistently.
Factors beyond cleaning
Smoking is the strongest modifiable risk factor for periodontal disease, and it also suppresses bleeding, which can hide the warning signs. Poorly controlled diabetes worsens gum disease, and gum disease in turn complicates glycaemic control.
Medications causing dry mouth or gum overgrowth, hormonal changes and stress can all influence gum condition. Mentioning changes in medication at dental visits is more useful than it sounds.
When to seek assessment
Book an appointment if bleeding persists beyond two weeks of careful cleaning, if gums are receding, if teeth feel loose or have shifted, if there is persistent bad taste or odour, or if pus is present at the gumline.
Key points
- Healthy gums are firm and do not bleed with proper cleaning.
- Angle bristles towards the gumline and use light pressure.
- Clean between the teeth daily with floss or interdental brushes.
- Smoking, diabetes and medications strongly influence gum health.
